Cox Technic (also called flexion-distraction) is a is a marriage of chiropractic and
osteopathic principles. It is a gentle technique applied manually with the use of a special table. This equipment allows the practitioner to safely decompress the spinal discs by localizing treatment to an individual disc and motion segment of the spine.
The Cox protocol was invented by Dr. James Cox some 45 years ago and continues the legacies of Dr. John McManis and later Dr. Alan Stoddard, osteopathic physicians, who were pioneers of this specific type of manipulation. Dr. Cox furthered their work and established well researched and implementable protocols for treating spinal conditions with the use of the Cox table. Cox Technic enjoys a long and productive history of objective research and excellent clinical outcomes. Dr. Wedemeyer was taught this protocol in his didactic training in chiropractic college and observes the Cox diagnostic and treatment protocols in the treatment of his patients.
Cox flexion-distraction manipulation is recognized as an effective and accepted chiropractic technique and it is a reimbursable benefit in both Medicare and group health insurance coverage.
Some of the conditions that benefit from Cox flexion-distraction are:
- Spondylolisthesis
- Stenosis
- Degenerative disc disease
- Facet syndrome
- Pelvic pain (of lumbar root origin)
- Compression defects
- Loss of spine lordosis
- Loss of range of spinal motion
- Whiplash-type injuries
- Scoliosis (not to cure, but to maintain mobility of the curve)
- Osteoporosis
- Transitional segment
- Pregnancy back pain
- Subluxation
- Postural faults
- Osteoarthritis of spine
- Patients unable to tolerate vigorous adjustment
- Synovial Cyst
- Coccydynia
- Mechanical back pain (such as that accompanying ankylosing spondylitis, collagen vascularizing diseases, pelvic pain, pregnancy)
- Fibromyalgia
* This list is neither inclusive of all conditions nor exclusive of other conditions. Not every patient with these specific conditions may benefit as other factors may influence the patient case. These are merely general conditions. The chiropractor will examine each patient carefully to determine the appropriate treatment method(s) for the individual patient.
